DESIGN STATEMENT

This video was meant to be much longer, and will hopefully be continued on at a later time, however, the rotoscoping took up alot more time than anticipated. It was a great learning experience. Figuring out how to export film into images, and getting them at the right resolution, preparing images for painting, and assembling everything, adding text and music was all a bit of a trial. It ended up working in the end, but I definitely learned alot (about what to do, or not do) for rotoscoping. I believe the piece works well as a short animated poem, illustrating the feeling of leaving your comfort zone, and almost ‘crossing over’ into a new life. It all starts with that first spark…

CREATIVE BRIEF

Overview: The idea of this video was to show the mysterious, and sometimes lonely feeling of being in another land. The crossover of the window is to show the traveling from somewhere familiar into a new place, and also the transformation that takes place when you leave home. It is meant to show (in an abstract way) how travel enriches lives. The statement is in German, and means: “The riskiest of all worldviews, is the worldview, of the people who have not gazed upon the world.”

Audience: The audience is fellow design students and instructors. Also, for anyone interested in slightly more experimental animations.

Key Message: I just want to portray the slightly lonely, but also exciting feeling of traveling, and seeing new things.

Content Planning: The text used is a poem from Alexander von Humboldt that reads: Die gefaehrlichste aller Weltanshauungen, Ist die Weltanshauung der leute, Welche die Welt nicht angeschaut haben.

Bibliography: No books or significant websites were used.

Visual/Conceptual References: Waking Life, the rotoscoping video Franci showed in class (with the paintings) and the fall of raindrops were meant to be simulated in the movement (along with the motion of the skirt).

Countdown!

Project title: 20/20

Statement: The concept for my countdown is based around a check-up at the optometrist (some parts being more accurate than others). The idea is that the various exercises that the eye doctor puts you through, brings you further to an accurate perscription (a countdown to better eyesight!). You could also say that time might be running out before you yourself need glasses!

Reference my previous post for the storyboard idea. I used video and After Effects, as well as some still images. I used numbers printed on transparencies, that were then positioned on a light table (covered in tissue paper to reduce the glare, it also adds a nice texture). Entirely experimental in nature, I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I plan on learning from my experiences and improving on my methods, for next time.

3:30 AM October 1

i can hear the faint sound of traffic
it would be so quiet without the cars
getting so cold. especially at night
cant sit outside without a sweater or jacket anymore
can hear a truck somewhere, louder than the rest
near the highway, can’t get away from the din
rustling of my slippers as i wiggle my toes
a car sounds like its getting closer, turns around  the drive
someone gets out, door shuts
car continues on, must have dropped someone off
more toe rustling
a door slams
another car starts up
backs out of a driveway
leaves
or only appears to leave
must have parked it somewhere else
i cough, causing the front porch door to rattle
sounds like an airplane far away
jingle of a dog collar, is someone walking there dog, now?
i itch my head, louder to me, than to anyone else, i bet
the screen door continues to creak from the weight of my back
breaks squeaking somewhere…
what sounds like crickets have started up
